The Water Edge
2022 Spring Design Studio VI
Site Plan: The site is located at the Boat Graveyard area along the Northern edge of the Staten Island. Around 1000 ft. away from the site location, there is a newly renovated film studio purchased by a film company called Broadway Stages, and will be use fully for film productions in the future. The goal of the project is to design a concealed resort space along the water edge dedicated to film crews, actors, and movie celebrities for recreational purposes.
Circulation: When people arrive at the building, they enter through the entrance and get to peak at the outdoor gallery through the glass, and arrive at the lobby, people get to separate into three circulations, at the left side, people get to travel outdoor into a gallery space and upward to a coffee shop; on the right side of the lobby, people can enter the living are, and on the left side of the lobby, people can enter the individual changing room area, and walk along the corridor to the pool area. When people arrive at the indoor pool area, they get to travel outside to the outdoor pool where a huge wall is inserted that people can project movies onto the wall and enjoy while hanging out in the pool. A tunnel is designed for people in the pool to walk inside and walk up to an elevated space, where all the jacuzzi, bar area is located.
The design language is mainly consists of two parts, huge slanted facades are extruded to direct circulations from one side to the other side, breaks and gaps are made in between walls in order to divide people’s views of the water, the building, and their experience into segments, sort of introducing a montage experience while traveling in and out between the walls. Volumes are inserted in between the facades and different programs and services are inserted into the volumes in between the walls.

Conceptual Development
This is the first activity of the semester. The goal of this drawing is to present how we interpret the idea of “pool” in a conceptual way, and for my drawing, it is created by putting the scenes from some of the movies I chose that include very strong pool elements within them, mostly from “The Blade Runner” and “The Hand of God”, due to their strong symbolic meaning of the pool elements used by the directors to signify character’s development, emotions in the movies and both of them share very strong architectural aesthetic and composition through their cinematography. The lines on the collage are derived from tracing the wall boundaries and water edges of the movie scenes in order to create a spatial quality.
